1 in 5000 women is born with MRKH (Mayer Rokitanksy Kuster Hauser) syndrome. It is a genital disorder in which a girl has short or absent vagina, no cervix, and partial or absent uterus. The etiological factors for such condition are however unknown. Such conditions are usually not diagnosed until the girl is in her teens. The girl does not have her menarche at normal age and then everyone notices the problem. Only gynecologists after doing ultrasonography are able to diagnose the condition. No doubt the condition affects the girl and her family mentally and psychologically.
Thereafter, obviously question comes is that of her marriage, normal sexual activity, and conception. Through proper counseling, she can definitely shed her fears and inferiority complex. Such girls can also enjoy normal sexual activities if they accept the condition and get love from their partner. However, the question of conception hovers. For such women, the only way to have children is either adoption or by gestational surrogacy. One can opt for any of them.
Many women with MRKH syndrome opt for gestational surrogacy these days. Many of them have proper ovaries and egg production is not hampered. Therefore, the egg is collected in controlled conditions and artificially fertilized by father’s sperm. This embryo is then implanted into the surrogate mother’s womb and the pregnancy is carried till term. Well, the centers like Palm Beach Fertility Center have safe surrogacy options available. Such women should opt for them and fill their lives with smile all over again!
